TOPIC 29: Analysis and articulation of discourse. Cohesion and coherence. Anaphora and cataphora. Connectives. Deixis.
1. INTRODUCTION
- Topic 29: deals with the analysis and articulation of discourse and focuses on cohesion and coherence.
- Student's difficulties in writing different types of texts = lack of vocabulary or the complexity of grammatical structure at sentence level BUT ALSO problems with cohesion and coherence.
- The topic is divided into 8 parts.

4. CONNECTIVES
To achieve coherence a writer must arrange their ideas in a logical order and bind them together by using connective words, phrases or sentences so that the reader can follow the writer's ideas without difficulty.
We differentiate the following connectives:
- Indicating order: first, next, finally..
- Indicating position in space: to the right, above...
- Adding ideas: moreover, also...
- Illustrating ideas: for instance
- Showing contrast: but, however..
- Showing result: as a result, therefore...
The function of connectives is to express various kinds of relations between utterances, that is why the connectives listed above are sets of expressions in relation with different grammatical categories: conjunctions, disjunctions, conditionals or contrastive relations.
5. DEIXIS
Deixis refers to words or phrases that cannot be fully understood without additional contextual information. There are three types: person deixis, place deixis, time deixis. The deictic center is the speaker's person, time and location and the other deictic words are relative to the deictic center.
Another type of deixis is the Discourse deixis.

7. CONCLUSION
- Important to get to know the analysis and articulation of discourse.. because discourse analysis goes far beyond the sentence level and examines coherence and cohesion. -> provide students with tools and guidelines not only to produce gramatically correct sentences but to know how to use cohesive devices to produce coherent texts.
- Apart from academic skills -> digital, personal and social skills.
- Teachers = willing to learn, adjust, evolve and adapt to the needs of the current society.
