MODALS FOR OBLIGATION AND ADVICE
SHOULD
We use the modal verb should to give or ask for ADVICE, OPINIONS and SUGGESTIONS. Ex. What should I do? Cosa dovrei fare?/ you should ask your teacher for the homework Devi chiedere all'insegnante per i compiti a casa
MUST
Affirmative
Inner obligation for the first person. Ex. I really must buy my mum a birthday card.
General order. Ex. You must finish your homework now
Suggestion. Ex. You must see that film, it's blilliant
Negative
Inner obligation for the first person. Ex. I mustn't get home too late, my parents will worry
Prohibition. Ex. You mustn't leave litter around
Written formal notice. Ex. You mustn't swim in the sea before 10:00
HAVE TO
Affirmative
Outer obligation. Ex. I have to do my homework (the teacher told me)
General obligation. You have to stop at the red light
Negative
It expresses a not necessary action. Ex. He doesn't have to wake up early on Saturday, there's no school.
INTERROGATIVE FORM
To express obligation with questions we can use only HAVE TO. Ex. Do I have to drive on the left in the UK?
