Bentley quit the Communist Party in 1944, and the next year she thought about informing the authorities of her spying efforts. In August 1945, she visited Old Lyme for a vacation. She paid a visit to the FBI in New Haven, Connecticut, while there. When Special Agent Edward Coady interrogated her, she resisted disclosing any information about her colleagues spies but did admit that the U.S. Service and Shipping Corporation, where she served as vice president, was used to transmit intelligence to the Soviet Union. Coady suggested that Bentley may be utilized as an informant in a report he wrote to the New York City office.
