The Battle of Saratoga, also known as the Battles of Saratoga, were a series of battles fought during the American Revolutionary War in September and October of 1777. The battles were fought near Saratoga, New York, between a British army under the command of General John Burgoyne and a Patriot army under the command of Generals Horatio Gates and Benedict Arnold.
The battles were significant for several reasons. The first battle, the Battle of Freeman's Farm, ended in a tactical victory for the British, but it resulted in heavy casualties for both sides. The second battle, the Battle of Bemis Heights, was a decisive victory for the Patriots, and it forced Burgoyne to retreat. The British were then surrounded and forced to surrender on October 17, 1777, in what is known as the Convention of Saratoga
