PT4 (May2022) : How do historians and human scientists give knowledge meaning through the telling of stories? Discuss with reference to history and the human sciences.
UNPACKING PT
HOW
Method/Ways - in what manner do historians & human scientists give knowledge meaning by telling stories
-
-
MEANING
- Clarity - the knowledge is clear to everyone; is understandable & no transparency
- Relevance - creating a link between the recipients and others; relatable (more convincing)
- Significance - how it is significant to yourself or to others
TELLING OF STORIES
Telling - have a conversation/relying message with others, or with yourself

AOK 2 : HUMAN SCIENCE
- Under human science, AOK mentioned in the PT, you will find examples of where knowledge meaning is passed through the telling of stories.
- In the context of telling stories, human science is closely related to media, narrative and oral.
NARRATIVE
For example, research describing a disease (COVID-19 or stress). Through an analysis, topics can be discussed in depth and more details can be included in the study but no matter how detailed experts explained something it is possible people would not care about it because they cannot really understand what is being said in the study.
ORAL
For example, having a consultation with a doctor or lecture in class. Analogies may be used to make people understand what is being said. Nevertheless, the knowledge will also be simplified and the actual thing to be conveyed may not be understood
MEDIA
For example, mass media about pandemics like COVID 19. Mass media can be divided into two types: online broadcasting and printing
Printings (graphical article, digital poster)
This method provides a quick summary of information for individuals to skim and remember. However, it should be noted that just by providing a person with brief pieces of knowledge and information, the person won't be able to make sense of it at all.
Online broadcast (news, livestream, social media)
The media allows for timely interventions by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO), enabling a rapid and widespread reach of public health communications.
- The significance of storytelling in giving knowledge meaning for human science
When scientists need to tell the media/public about something, storytelling simplifies it.
However, stories won't really help in research and data collection that is used to obtain scientific knowledge.
It's easier to get to people and make them understand than formal and scientific language - as non-experts will get bored if they don't understand it.
