Developing My Teaching Philosophy
My Concepts of Learning
Practices that encourage cramming should be avoided. (understanding of the module contents should be prioritised - formula and necessary/useful information should be provided in the assessment, where possible, to discourage cramming).
Students should not be allowed to take part in impromptu assignment/test/assessment – students should be given notice so they can enough time to prepare. The nature/type of the assignment/test/assessment should be made clear to the students well in advance.
Students should be given enough practical/lab experience (students should have practical and industrial related experience to have a feel of what happen in the industries - bridging the school - industrial gaps).
Learning policy/practice which will help students to remember the principles and theories they learnt in a module after graduation should be put in place. - It should not just be about just passing the module. How the students will use the knowledge acquired after school should be given strong consideration.
I think that it is necessary for teachers to update their notes from time to time using the latest/current/modern techniques, concepts and principles. The solely use of old lecture notes which are void of recent advances by teachers should be discouraged
Students should be encouraged to ask questions in class (This can be achieved when the students become/develop interest in what they are being thoughts).
It is normal (and can be beneficial to students) for different lecturers to deliver different aspects of a complex module based on the area of expertise and industrial/research experience of the lecturers (The students will can maximize the benefits they derive from the modules due to the specialisation of the individual lecturers).
Create a platform for student in the class or taking a module to learn from any student using the teacher’s support/advice to overcome a challenge.
Students can benefit from guest lecturers delivered occasionally by speakers with industrial experience
Group study/group work should be encouraged
My Concept of Teaching
To share my knowledge and experience with the students
To produce/turn out students who will use the knowledge acquired to shape the industries and contribute to national building
To bring excellence to teaching and learning profession through the introduction of new teaching and learning methods; advancement of existing teaching and learning techniques; and mentoring of upcoming teaching professionals
Encourage students to profer solutions to challenging and complex tasks through critical thinking.
What are my values, beliefs and aspirations as a teacher
I would like my students to participate actively when in class, engage with their studies after each class, and interact with fellow students through group discussions. Students’ interest in the modules can be aroused if the teaching and learning process is centred around them. Students’ active participation, engagement and interaction with colleagues will in turn be enhanced, when they find the module interesting.
I also believe that authentic way of assessing the students’ understanding can give the students on-the-job experience and introduce the students to real life examples, applications and scenarios. This can arouse the students’ interest in the modules and also help the students to remember and apply what they have been taught when faced with similar situations. Also, I am aware that diversity in term of cultural background and needs exist among students. I would like to explore different assessment approaches that are inclusive and will consider these diversity and needs.
Activities that students carry out can be enhanced by adopting the use of different digital devices and technology. It is important for me to understand the working of those technologies and how they can be deployed to enhance the student experience.
What does a sucessful learning look like to me
The students give positive feedback
Generally, the students perform well in the assessments
The module objectives and learning outcomes are achieved
