Medieval History, Hierarchy and the Feudal System, Clergy:
The clergy…
Medieval History
Medieval Europe
Medievel Europe refers to the period of time between the fall of Rome in 476 CE and the Renassaince 1500 CE
Crimes and Punishment
Crime and punishment in the Middle Ages was harsh and unforgiving. one of the reasons for this was to maintain control of people through fear.
Punishments:
- Cutting off somebody's hand was often the punishment for thievery
- Being placed in a pillock for public humilitation was also a common punishment. Even something like this could be harmful as people would throw objects at them
- Being burnt at the stake or hanged for the crime of being a witch, a personal claim with no evidence to back it
Black Death
The Black Death was a plague that reached Medieval Europe in the 1300s. It was a disaster which killed off 30 - 60% of the population. It was spread to Europe by fleas on rats, and soon made its way around the continent
The plague first affected peasants, people who worked in worse condiions than anybody else at the time. This led the Church to call it God's will, as the peasants were dirtier and easier to believe as sinners. The plagu then affected nobles, and even the clergy. This led to more people losing faith in Christianity
Imacts on Society
Negative
- Population decreased immensely
- World trade was slowed down
- Labour shortages in Europe eventually contributed to slave trade in Africa
Positives
- People were led to acting and thinking independantly, due to loss of faith in the Church
- This resulted in greater discoveries in the scientific world
- The lives of peasants improved. There were less of them but they were very valuable, so they were able to negotiate better wages and working condtions
Religion and Church
Christianity in the Middle Ages was one of the most importnat aspects of life. It affected everybody and all parts of their life.
Though the King seemed to be in power, the Church was actually the one behind everything. They could decide whether or not the king had divine right to rule, owned 25% of the land and was a force that everyone believed in
One of the reasons they were so powerful was because of the people who believed in their cause. The church could decide who was a sinner, and who wasn't. This caused plenty of people to want o be on their good side. They were also harsh in their punishments, controlling people through fear
