METHOD
- digital ethnography (everyday for a 3 month period) + thematic analysis
They worked with the algorithm, by liking videos focused on gender and sexual minority content, they tried to encourage the algorithm to show them similar content
Videos were filtered, recorded and catergorized by topic
KEY FINDINGS
- Overall theme = TikTok as a supportive community, subthemes = 1. Support with family relationships, 2. Identity formation, 3. Community and belonging, 4. Sharing knowledge and information.
OTHER
- impact of the pandemic on gender and sexual minority youth (15-25 years)
Fowler et al. (2021) Sex Education on TikTok
KEY FINDINGS
- 1. Female anotomy was the most addressed topic, Sexual pleasure was the next most common theme, Other common themes were sexual health and contraception. 2. These topics weren't the same as what is being taught in schools (USA).
There was also a theme relating to the failure of traditional sex education
METHOD
- Content analysis of themese for 100 sex education focused videos on TikTok
One researcher created an account of a hypothetical 15 year old in the USA, then used this to search for certain hashtags in the discover page
Stored links to videos in a spreadsheet
The order videos were viewed was based on the TikTok algorithm not solely on number of likes and comments
Inductive coding to identify themes and subthemes - these were based on the primary focus of the video
OTHER
- Needs to be further research on the factual accuracy of sex education content on TikTok
Researching Everyday Childhoods (Thomson, Berriman & Bragg)
Methods used
1. 'the favourite things method'
Multimedia output - photos (of favourite thing), audio recording of interview, sounds of favourite thing, and researcher field notes
A recorded interview, whereby children are asked to come prepared with 2 objects (either real or digital) that present their past and present/future - these are then used as a starting point for the interview
it provided "researchers with a window into their play words and a sense of the people and places of importance to them" (p.18)
2. the 'day in the life' method
Multimedia output - used photos and audio recordings to document what took place, also field notes after the event. Children also produced their own 'day in the life' documents which were compared to the researchers
"By literally walking alongside participants, we hoped to understand how the digital infuses everyday practices including those face to face" (p.23)
(+) This was a strength as it enabled the researcher to capture how how children moved from face-to-face and digital communication
(-) Although it is difficult to observe what participants are doing on digital technology as is it easy for them to 'screen' them out e.g. by using headphones
Researchers followed a participant for the day, throughout their daily activities, recording what happened both via photographs, audio recording and field notes - these would then be used to help write a thicker description after the event
3. the 'recursive workbook' method
"this method is flexible and can encompass a wide variety of data forms, including images, audio extracts, field notes, quotations etc." (p.33)
It is a longitudinal method that involved selecting material/data from previous research/interviews which were curated into a book that was worked through during an interview (a 'temporal collage' p.32), asking participants to respond to this old material of themselves
"it relies on an existing body of documents collected over time that can operate as provocations for understanding and discussion...it is...a reflexive method (inviting reflections on the process and experience of being documented)" (p.31)
Participant children were more likely to respond to short multimedia documents, as oppose to raw research documents
