Water Properties
Cohesion
-
-
Water is extremely cohesive due to the fact that a single water molecule may be involved in as many as four hydrogen bonds at the same time
Creates surface tension
Cohesion also produces surface tension, which is why some insects and spiders can walk on a pond’s surface.
Polar
Water is a polar molecules because the Oxygen is slightly negative while the Hydrogen is slightly positive.
H2O has 8 protons in its nucleus, an oxygen atom has a much stronger attraction for electrons than does a hydrogen atom with its single proton.
It is said to be “polar,” because the molecule is a bit like a magnet with two poles.
-
Heat Capacity
It takes a large amount of heat energy to cause water molecules to move faster and raise the temperature of the water because of the multiple hydrogen bonds between water molecules.
-
Hydrogen Bonding
Hydrogen Bonding is the attraction between a hydrogen atom on one water molecule and the oxygen atom on another.
