The Church
The Church was a powerhouse back in the middle ages. They basically had complete control over people's lives. The Church would be given 25% of all land by the king and 10% of all income of the people. The Church also had the power to dethrone the king if they so pleased
The pope: The pope was at the very top of the Church and was the man in charge. He was very wealthy.
The priest: The priest provided care for the community and offered spiritual guidance. He would often baptize children and hold church services.
The nuns and monks: The nuns and monks looked after sick and poor people. They were also very smart academically. Monks would copy manuscripts for the Church.
The bishop: The bishops were the leaders of the Church (obviously under the pope though), their job was to collect taxes and they were often very rich
Black Death
The black death was a horrible epidemic that happened from 1347-1352 and killed the middle age's version of 1/3 of the population which was 25 million people
It was passed on through infected fleas on rats that would bite humans and pass on the fleas. Infected humans would get 'buboes' which were pus-filled boils on the groin, legs, and neck. They could get to the size of chicken eggs
The black death was as bad as it was because people in the middle age had basically no sense of hygiene or health. People would often bathe once a month.
The black death is still around today, but as or understanding of medicine has improved, our easiness to cure disease has as well. There are still many cases of the black death today but all you need to cure it is simple anitbiotics.
