Ways Humans Damage The Land
Deforestation
:red_flag:
Since 1990 the world has lost about one billion acres of forest.

Today, the greatest amount of deforestation is occurring in the rainforest.
Many companies use Slash and Burn methods of deforestation, which causes the land to be fertilized by the ash, but this only last for a few years and then they move on to other areas.
Deforestation can cause the release of more carbon dioxide into our air supply.
Unsustainable Agricultural Practices
:red_flag:
The EPA estimates 50% of water used in agriculture is wasted in irrigation.
Half a ton of pesticides are used every year.
Industrial food production has tainted ground and surface water with hormones and pathogens, and contaminated the air with pollutants.
Excess tilling cause soils to become unhealthy and disrupts its structure.
Agriculture has turned into a corporation that values profit over sustainability
Poaching
:red_flag:
In Tanzania, 30 Elephants are killed per day for the illegal collection of Ivory.
There are less than 10,000 Clouded Leopards that remain in the wild due to poaching.
11,000 Rhinos have been poached in Africa since 2008.
Nearly 1,000 Rhinos are being killed per year in South Africa.
Biodiversity Loss
:red_flag:
Ecosystems are being disrupted by the disappearance of a biological variety.
Over-exploitation on the environment and destruction (such as deforestation) are main contributors for biodiversity loss.
Half of Earth's habitable land has been converted into farmland, which has caused a 60% decline in the number of vertebrates worldwide.
Poaching contributes to biodiversity loss.
Desertification
:red_flag:
Land is desertified when it can no longer sustain plant growth permenantly.
Can be caused by fire, drought, deforestation, overgrazing.
Exposed soils can lead to dust storms.
The Dust Bowl in the 1930s was due to the rapid elimination of natural habitats. It caused the displacement of soil for 6 years.
