Summative Assessment
Summative assessment is an assessment administered at the end of an instructional unit in a course. These assessments are intended to evaluate student learning by comparing performance to a standard or benchmark. They are often high-stakes, meaning they have a high point value.

Assessment for learning
Assessment for learning occurs on a daily/weekly basis in the classroom in order to ascertain whether students have comprehended the lesson/learning goals. It is a constant feedback loop for the teacher that helps identify, early on, those students that might need extra help.
As John Hattie put it, assessments for learning help make learning "more visible". He ranked feedback as 10th out of 150 factors that increase a student's ability to achieve in the classroom.

Questions to ask: Where are my students now? Where do I want them to go? How do I help them get there.
Assessments for learning often take the form of formative assessments as these are more likely to give ongoing feedback along the way as to whether a student is grasping the essential learning concepts:

Diagnostic Assessment
Diagnostic assessments are intended to help teachers identify what students know and can do in different domains to support their students’ learning. These kinds of assessments may help teachers determine what students understand in order to build on the students’ strengths and address their specific needs. Source: here

Formative Assessment

A formative assessment tracks student learning in "real time" providing immediate feedback in order for teachers to improve, tailor, and/or adjust their teaching methods to better fit the learning styles and needs of the student.
Performance Assessment
An approach to educational assessment where students directly demonstrate what they know and are able to do through open-ended tasks such as constructing an answer, producing a project, or performing an activity.
