Digestion of Carbohydrates - Coggle Diagram
Digestion of Carbohydrates
1. Mouth
Digestion starts in the mouth
Starch is converted to dextrin and matose by salivary amylase
2. Stomach
Acid in the stomach inactivates salivary amylase
No further digestion in stomach
Pancreas
They secrete the enzyme pancreatic amylase into the small intestine that break down the sugars further
3. Small Intestine
Starch is converted to dextrin and maltose by pancreatic amylase
Dextrin is converted to Glucose by Dextrinase
Sucrose is converted to Glucose and Fructose by Sucrase
Lactose is converted to Glucose and Galactose by Lactase
Maltose is converted to Glucose and Glucose by Maltase
Monosaccharides are absorbed by villi on the walls of small intestine and they enter the blood
4. Large intestine
Non-digestible carbohydrates move to the large intestine
Water is absorbed
Stool is formed that is secreted through rectum and anus
