MORAL VALUES
TYPES OF MORAL VALUES
- ABSOLUTE VALUES
-Value the worth that is not related to the custom of a certain society.
- Values from religion sources.
EXAMPLE: We should respect our parents because is being taught in all religions. - Murdering is considered as morally wrong because it is going against the natural order of things.
- OBJECTIVE VALUES
Definition: Qualities or statement which are based on individual' s beliefs or opinions and is agreed by majority of people
Example:
-Killing someone in cold blood, and not because of self-defense, is not morally justified
- Beggars shouldn’t be given alms but should be taught how to work because this way they will never be able to come out of the begging thing. And by not giving them the alms we are helping them to cede begging.
- INSTRINSIC VALUE
Definition:
-Moral values that not depending the other values to achieve certain objectives.
- Moral values that involves with first order values which is kind, justice, rights, fair play
- Quality rejected/ accepted solely because of its good/ bad without considering it.
EXAMPLE
An individual who like to volunteer will participate himself/ herself in social services and volunteerisms .
- The judge sentenced a life long jail imprisonment to a murderer solely because of his obligations to do so not simply because he wanted to prevent the same murder.
- SUBJECTIVE VALUE
-Quality accepted/rejected by someone who gives.
Example:
In the case of United States attacks Iraq, BRITAIN view that Unites States SHOULD attack Iraq for the sake of long term peace in the world so that Iraq could not continue to produce weapons of mass destruction.
- INSTRUMENTAL VALUES
Quality received or rejected as instrument to achieve certain objective .
-Terminal values are defined as our end goals.
-Depents on other values to achieve certain objective
-It is the second order value which is the bravery and diligence.
-Be calm, restrain emotions
Example:
-Bombing Hiroshima to end second World War.
-Imposing the death penalty for drug trafficking to stamp out drug trafficking activities.
-Recycling campaign is to reduce items thrown away.
- RELATIVE VALUE
-Recycling campaign is to reduce items thrown away.
In Malaysia, legally married couples are only allowed to stay together.
- Muslims are not allowed to eat pork.
- Wedding ritual/Bangle ceremony will be followed by each religion such as Indian, Muslim and so on.
Refers to the value which guides the behavior of a person's change.
*Social, cultural, religious, legal will be taken into account.
*Differ from other societies, communities or countries.
