Partnership of Citizens
Republicanism rests on belief indiv are free and equal and have public responsibility and personal stake in promoting a better society....individual values common good more highly than own good.....basis of the virtue
In classical repb society, public interest known and understtod by all cuz community is small and made of member sharing common culture and background and belonged to a political community.....shared citizenship....in repub mindset required pursuit of virtue and was central goal of political community
Public good not revolve around desires of one ruler because govt become despotic.....leaders seek own interests and become corupt......USSR/Stalin/1929-1953.....Haiti/Francois Duvalier 1957-1971.
Some not generally included in parternership of citizens........classic repubs date back to Rome limited citizenship to free men........Am Repub recognize free white men/women as citizens though rights differed.......voting, holding office....serve on juries......only property owners had a stake in society and trusted to promote public good

Separation of Powers
Aristotle....believed successful repub best achieved by mixed constitution (mixed govt)...which divides power.......monarch, legislature, aristocracy.....called separation of powers...disticnt branches of govt.....allows branches to influence decisions made in other branches/prevent tyranny of majority......checks and balances to fight despotism and corruption..
Need checks and balances in leg branch..branch that represents people and passes laws......Republicanism called for bicameral legislature (bi=two camera=chamber)......divides legs body into two chambers
1.2 Core American Values: Life, Liberty, POH
Jefferson echoes Locke saying ppl created equal with rights by creator (unalienable).....only taken away by creator, not govt....life, liberty, POH,.....
-
Right to liberty....freedom to decide how want to live lives....free to pursue self-interests........
POH.....ability to make choices to satisfy themselves.....might be to pursue property or some other passion
