Plate Tectonics
Plate Tectonic Theory
-
One of the foundational works that gave rise to this theory is the first world atlas, "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum" which was developed and published by Abraham Ortelius on May 20, 1570. Ortelius noted the similarity between coastlines of Africa, Europe, and the Americas and adopted Plato's story.
He suggested that America was originally connected to Europe and Africa and that the projecting parts of two continents would fit the recesses of America
Major Tectonic Plates
-
-
Tertiary Plates
Smaller parts of primary or secondary plates that have broken off and continued being broken up over time.
-
Lithospheric Plates
The Lithosphere is the rigid, solid, outhermost part of the earth, including the upper crust and the mantle
-
Oceanic Crust
-
It is younger than the continental crust as the oldest age for this type is around 200 million years old compared to a 4 billion-year-old continental crust
In terms of thickness, oceanic crust measure only around 7km thick while continental crush range from 10-70km thick.
-
Raisin Theory
Earth is like a grape that contracted into a raisin due to the cooling process that occurred on Earth after the Big Bang about 13.77 billion years ago
They thought that the cooling caused the contraction and pressure that allowed some parts of the crust buckled downward, creating ocean basins and other depressions
