Influence of the USA
- During the 3rd war to gain Cuban independance, US joined the war on their side.
- First US occupation: Spanish had hold on Cuba, but troops replaced with US troops
- 1880: why the US wanted to invade Cuba
1) the increase of Cuban revolt against Spain
2) preasure of US businesses
3) increase of Cuban nationalists: Marti
US business: closely involved with Cuba and invested a lot of money. US were worried about Cuban independence
The US promoted anti-Spanish propaganda convincing the public to support American intervention
- In 1898, USS Maine blew up, and the Spanish were blamed. The US declared war and the Spanish were defeated. US occupied Cuba
In 1905, US gave Cuba its independance. But the 1901 Platt amendment meant that the Us could interve at any time. Elections were rigged in Cuba
With encourragement from the US, dictator Machado resigned and was replaced by Grau, a uni Prof. A new Cuba was promised. Grau removed the Platt ammendement and this worried the US>
Batista
- In the 1930-40's there was mass support for Batista - 1950's Batista introduced limited social improvements. The Onente province had the lowest literacy rates in Cuba and were responsible for 30% of unemployment.
1953, Castro emulated Marti to begin his revolution
- Most politically influential man in Cuba. He supported right wing. The USA quickly recognized this new provisional government and the promise of social and economic reforms died.
- Student and worker led protested met with police brutality
President during 1940-44
Batista was able to gain support from a wide cross-section of Cuban society. His hubble orgin helped, he came from a peasentry background and only learnt to read and write after joining the army. As Cuba's first non-white ruler, he was able to draw on the support of the non-white population.
Social
- Western area: white Cubans/Spanish decent
- Eastern area: Black Cubans. Poorest and most rebellious
- Many European immigrated to the Western part of the island
- Eastern province separated by the Sierra Maesta mountains.
- Slaves found refuge in the East
- Eastern: Lawless, political neglecated and economically underdeveloped

Colonial History
- 1886, Spanish goverement abolished slavery in Cuba.
1895, Jose Marti began a war against Spanish leaders
- 1868-98, Cuba fought 3 wars to hold their island.
- Marti inspired the final war, died in action and became a national hero

Economy
- Cuba was enterily dependant on slave produced goods + trade with the USA.
- USA owned many cuban plantations
- Main trading ports were in the West of Cuba.
