Hydrocarbons
What is the hydrocarbon prefix of...
Meth-
Eth-
Prop-
But-
Pent-
Hex-
Hept-
Oct-
What are the four main stages of the carbon cycle?
Carbon dioxide is in the atmosphere is absorbed by plants to make carbohydrates
Animals eatplants and give most of the carbon out in the form of carbon dioxide by breathing
Plants and animals die and decompose. Carbon goes back into the ground
Carbon dioxide is released by releasing fossil fuels
What is an alkane?
A saturated (single bonds only) hydrocarbon
They're insoluble in water
Boiling and melting points increase when the number of carbons increase
The general formula for alkanes is
CnH2n+2
What are some examples of fossil fuels?
Coal
Made from tress and plants
Takes 100s of millions of years to form
Needs high pressure and temperature to form
Crude oil
Made from organisms
Takes 100s of millions of years to form
Needs high pressure and temperature to form
Natural gas
Methane is the primary component
Earth's cleanest burning hydrocarbon
It's combustion does not produce ash residues etc.
This sets it apart from other fossil fuels
What is an alkene?
An unsaturated hydrocarbon with a Carbon Carbon double bond
The general formula for alkanes is
CnH2n
Alkenes share the same properties as alkanes despite being double bonds
What is a fuel?
A substance that reacts exothermically with oxygen
The energy contained is released when it burns
What is combustion?
Burning in oxygen
Exothermic reaction
What is a homologous series?
A group of compounds with similar chemical properties and a general formula
What are hydrocarbons?
Compounds that contain carbon and hydrogen only
