Who is involved in cyberbullying?
There are generally 2 people involved in a cyberbullying scenario, but there can be up to 5 roles played.
The By-Stander- The person who witnesses or hears about someone being cyberbullied
The Victim- The person on the receiving end of the actions and words of the bully
The Bully- The instigator who is using words or actions with the intent to harm someone and make them feel bad
The Up-stander- This is an extension of the By-stander and is when they step up to help the victim by notifying someone, telling the bully what they're doing is wrong or help the victim escape the situation
The trusted adult- This is generally a parent of the victim but can be anyone from an older sibling, other relative, teacher, coach etc that is trustworthy and the victim feels comfortable around
Are schools in Australia doing anything to address cyberbullying?
Teachers are being taught techniques to help notice bullying and strategies to intervene appropriately
Schools like ours are now teaching specific wellbeing units as part of their extra-curricular priorities to bring awareness to it
There are national campaigns to counter bullying like "Bullying, No Way!" which schools participate in
Online, schools participate use #bekind to help bring awareness to cyberbullying
There are resources available for teachers to learn about cyberbullying on the AITSL website
How do we help ourselves and others when experiencing cyberbullying?
As a victim of cyberbullying it can feel so hard to speak up: Here are some ways to help you or those around you experiencing cyberbullying
Speak to a friend or trusted adult. They care about you and want you to be safe and happy and will do what it takes to resolve the situation
If the cyberbully won't stop after you ask them to, then consider blocking them to stop the chain of communication
If someone seems upset when they're on their phone or other technologies, tell them that you've noticed how they feel and ask if they want to talk about it. If yes, have a conversation. If no, it is best that you tell them that you'll let someone know
Have a break from social media. Connect with the people you care about without technology and have real life experiences
Are there different types of cyberbullying?
Harassment- The most common form. Generally involves repeated verbal abuse to upset and harm the victim
Sexual Harassment- Involves inappropriate messaging that the victim is uncomfortable with. Can involve explicit photos or inappropriate language
Trolling- An aim to confuse or upset the victim by telling jokes or lies about them
Doxing- Sharing a victims exact location to put them at risk from strangers
Fraping- Impersonating the victim with a fake social media account in an effort to ruin their reputation and do something wrong acting as them
Catfishing- The bully acts as someone else completely. Generally they'll trick the individual into being friends with the fake persona before revealing they're fake and making fun of their naivity
Dissing- Bullies spread rumours, generally fake, in an aim to embarrass and humiliate their victim
Exclusion- Deliberate effort to push the victim away from social events and interactions to ake them feel left out
There are countless forms of bullying or cyberbullying. Here are some key ones but there can potentially be many more.
Bullying that occurs online on anywhere from social media, email, texts, video game lobbies etc Unfortunately, it usually combines with in person bullying and technology is what keeps it with the victim as they make it home
