Environmental Psychology - Stress

The effects of aircraft noise on the health and wellbeing of the community must be understood before devising strategies and counter-measures

Noise parameter - considered the noise gap between aircraft noise and background environmental noise

exposure to aircraft noise has reflexes including stress

Long term or chronic stress can cause health problems

stress is a physical reaction to something perceived as dangerous or threatening

Hypertension is the medical term for elevated blood pressure. Sound can impact on blood pressure.

Stress itself makes people less tolerant to an unwanted sound

airport managers try to minimise exposure to aircraft noise, however health affects have been ignored when building airports

the association between aircraft noise and hypertension was found marginally signifcant

Morrell et al. - found no significant correlation between aircraft noise exposure and resting blood pressure

Lundberg et al. - played noise to participants whilst they concentrated on a mental arithmetic task. Having a lack of control over noise can cause stress

Penge at al.- exmained relationship between ambient temperature outdoors and admission to mental hosiptal. Temperature can trigger mental health problems, negative impact of hot temperatures (not cold)

Pilot study - to test reliability
