Revolutionary failure
Austrian military might
Piedmont, Naples and the Papal States were able to strengthen their hold due to the help of the Austrian's military force
-
Austrian army well-equipped, better trained
-
Lack of popular support
Pope Pius IX
-
-
29th April Pope Pius IX made a formal declaration opposing change (unity in Italy)> no support for Italian unification from the Pope anymore, and there is no more religion supporting the cause
Pope Pius IX fled from Rome after mazzini imposes a Roman republic, this reduced catholic support
-
Lack of unity
There was not an agreement and there was exclusion of other groups:
-Naples and sicily were particularly loggerheads
-Charles Alber would not accept volunteers from other states in his army or work with any revolutionary groups
-The revolutionaries had different groups, and this meant also different armies.
-Most Italians were against the desire of piedmont's military and aristocracy for dynastic expansion.
-Roman and Florentine republics were too extreme for many Italians since they were too democratic, too opposed to the pope and too hostile to traditional authority.
-in Piedmont there were divisions between the government and the ruling classes about wether to support Italian unity
