People
Situation: Chartered Engineer/ Mid level team member with technicians and graduates being assigned to me in the team. Need to deliver!
Task: Keep them busy, keep them productive, keep them out of trouble and develop them!
Action: Made time in my role to mentor, coach and train each person in line with their needs and aspirations. Actively listened and used my network to create opportunities for them and give them exposure. Their success is my success and Atkins success. Both have subsequently left but two staff have achieved chartership and one was recently promoted to a responsible position in National Highways.
Result: As proud of the achievements of the people who have left Atkins to take key roles in other organisations especially with our clients. Creating this network is important to build relationships and win future work.
Learning: We all have a responsibility to develop people irrespective of our role. I am particularly determined to make sure we give opportunities to the widest diversity of people. I am currently acting as DE for one team member and mentoring another. Diverse views are really valuable in achieving safe outcomes in design!

Commerical
Situation: Opportunities where the client is under public pressure and is looking for a swift procurement and delivery
Task: Managed the reputational, liability and delivery risks whilst winning the work and delivering a good margin.
Action: Brought my technical know-how to bear by working with the wider bidding teams, or leading the bid, and making sure we are clear on what we can offer the client in the timescales.
Result: Atkins have continued to deliver a number of high profile SM related tasks that tackle the most difficult and high profile safety issues. Alongside this we have been able to increase the budget to the allowable maximum and agree CEs with the client without misleading or mis-selling our services. We have been clear and transparent about inclusions and exclusions in our offer.
-
Stakeholder
Situation: Research Task where the outcome had been pre-judged and conventional wisdom was ingrained.
-
Action: Approached it from a number of angles. Statistical, logical and from a human perspective with relatable examples. Also allowed the client to not appear to be "wrong" and avoided a conflict. Allowed them to "go on a journey" to find the answer themselves.
-
Learning: Some of this process took too much time and the challenge could have been anticipated at the start. I would plan in more detail for stakeholder delivery risks at the outset of a project.
