        Feudalism was based on rights and obligations. In order for military protection. The person that owned land was a lord and the person receiving was a vassal.
        
        Feudalism worked like a pyramid
        
        In the middle ages the majority of people were peasants or serfs
        
        Although serfs were not slaves all that they produced went to the lord

        Peasants rarely traveled more than 25 miles outside their own manor. 15-30 families lived in a village on the manor
        
        Streams could wound up through a manor providing food and water. Mills that grinded grain were often found in the stream
        
        Manors were very self-sufficient due to thoughtful land use. Serfs and peasants produced nearly everything that was needed for daily life such as crops, milk, cheese, fuel, cloth, and lumber. Only outside purchases were iron, salt, and unusual objects as milestones.
        
        crops grown on the manor were grains such as rye, wheat, barley, and oats. Vegetables were peas, beans, onions, and beets.

        One area where independent thoughts happened in the manor life was engineering and invention for use on the farm. during this time, the metal horse was invented.

        For having the privilege of living on the lord's land. They had to pay tax on all grain ground in the lord's mill. Any attempt to avoid taxes was a crime.
        
        Marriage was also taxed. Wedding could only take place if the lord allowed it. After all of these payments, The wedded couple had to pay a tithe( Tax that represented 1/10 of their income)
        
        Serfs lived in crowded houses. Peasants warmed dirt floors by bringing pigs inside. Diets were simple and consisted mainly of vegetables, brown bread, grain, cheese, and soup
        
        Many children didn't survive to adulthood as illness and malnutrition affected peasants. Average life span was 35 years old
