The accreditation is an external, systematic, periodic, and voluntary evaluation process to which healthcare institutions can demonstrate compliance with superior levels of quality.
Method: 22 health institutions with experience in the Icontec accreditation process were surveyed. It was evaluated: added value given from the accreditation, evaluation process, and final report.
The study used a descriptive cross-sectional method that followed the results of the report from the surveys.
Conclusions:
The Icontec accreditation system adds value to the health institutions in most of the thematic areas evaluated, nevertheless the results do not arrive in time to make the necessary changes that can improve the service and quality.
