Areas of the brain

-
two hemispheres
the left hemisphere controls movement of the right side of the body - also involved in speech and language
the right hemisphere controls movement on the right side of the body - involved in spatial processing and non-literal aspects of language
the four lobes
frontal lobe (front of cerebrum) controls executive functioning - decision making/attention/voluntary movements
parietal lobe (behind front lobe) controls primary sensory areas and information processing of senses, and language processing
temporal lobe (sides of brain) controls primary auditory cortices producing visual information like learning and memory - also contains hippocampus and amygdala

Neurons
-
Structure of a neuron
Made up of cell body, axon and terminal buttons
Cell body: Includes a nucleus (containing genetic material of the cell). Dendrites protrude from the cell body carrying nerve impulses
Axon: Carries impulses from the cell body. Covered in a fatty layer called myelin sheath that protects axon. The sheath is segmented by gaps called nodes of Ranvier which helps speed up transmission of the impulse.
