      - Variables are factors in a system or an experiment that can change. You must identify all the possible variables and describe what type of variable each one will be. There are three types:
    - - An experiment in which all variables are held constant except one.
        
        All subjects in an experiment are compared with one or more controls. In the corn experiment, the plot of corn that received no fertilizer is the control.

If your search is too limited, you might not be able to identify the person who committed the crime.
        
        You are having a discussion with a friend. Your friend says that slugs are, on average, bigger than snails. You think snails are bigger. When gathering your data, it would be easy to collect only big snails, leaving out examples that don't support your hypothesis. But this would be an example of a dishonest, biased investigation. You would be manipulating the data to support the conclusion you prefer.
        
        You want to know whether chemicals in tap water affect how soaps work. If you study just one sample of water or water collected from only one source, you might not get an accurate result. Some individual samples might have unique characteristics due to their particular conditions. For example, a leaky pipe might change the quality of the water running through it. You won't have enough evidence to support a conclusion
