BIRDS
NATURAL SCIENCE
what do birds eat
high-energy foods like seeds and fruits, insects and other animals, nectar, or meat from dead animals
Many birds feed insects to their babies to help them grow fast even if the adult birds eat seeds or fruits
Habitat
Birds can be found in all habitats above ground and there are even some species that make nests in underground burrows
Types of Birds
There are over 10,000 surviving bird species. The majority of them have the ability to fly. There are very few flightless birds.
The 6 main types of birds include the songbirds, woodpeckers, hummingbirds, birds of prey, waterfowl and flightless birds
characteristics
There are many different types of bird beaks or bills
No bird is without feathers, nor is there any other kind of animal that has them.
Vision is the bird's most highly developed sense.(Ullman, n.d.)
What are birds and where do they come from?
birds are descendants of dinosaurs and they are warm blooded vertebrates.
they have feathers and toothless beaked mouths
Classroom activity
Backyard Bird Watching
Set up an Outdoor Space for Bird Watching: Add a variety of Bird Feeders, Nesting Materials, Binoculars, a notebook for drawing birds, Reference Books, and a comfy space to sit and observe. (Pre-K Printable Fun, n.d.)
TECHNOLOGY
Flight
Most birds that fly have hollow bones that are very light and strong
Flight is used by birds as a means of locomotion in order to find food and mates and to avoid predators. Although not all modern birds can fly, they all evolved from ancestors that could.
Their wings are airfoils (like an airplane wing) that produce lift when they flap them.
Structure and functions of birds
Birds are endothermic tetrapod vertebrates. They are bipedal, which means they walk on two legs. Birds also lay amniotic eggs with hard, calcium carbonate shells(flexbooks.ck12.org, n.d.).
how did man use birds to invent
the study of birds by inventors led to the amazing technologies and products invented
Inventors studied the flight of birds with a desire to fly like them up in the sky and travel long distances over oceans, mountains, plains and deserts.(Niaz, 2016)
Wings and Feathers
they are actually modified front legs
Feathers help birds fly and also provide insulation and serve other purposes
Classroom activity
making a paper plane
SOCIAL SCIENCE
social interaction
nests to protect and care for their young and by instinct, every bird knows exactly how to build the right
kind of nest for its eggs.
defend resources and attract mate
energetically demanding
In most species, one or both parents take care of the eggs.
communicate through sound
Bird songs and sounds
Birds communicate by making a variety of sounds and
songs.
There are two basic categories of sounds.
Some birds imitate or mimic the songs of other birds or human sounds such as alarms or
whistles. (northern mockingbird)
More than 10,000 bird species around 4,000 are song birds
Woodpeckers have songs and calls, but they also communicate by rapping or drilling on trees or other surfaces. (downy woodpecker)
Classroom activity - Children design their own sound shaker by putting different amounts of beans and
seeds in a small container (recycled plastic containers, baby food jars, etc.).
Migration
Navigation is complicated because it requires three things, current location, their destination, and the direction they must take to get there.(All About Birds, 2007)
Birds migrate to move from areas of low or decreasing resources to areas of high or increasing resources.(All About Birds, 2007)
Permanent residents Short-distance migrants, Medium-distance migrants,Long-distance migrants, The pattern of migration can vary within each category, but is most variable in short and medium distance migrants.(All About Birds, 2007)
