Realism was an artistic movement that emerged in France in the 1840s, around the 1848 Revolution.
Realists rejected Romanticism, which had dominated French literature and art since the early 19th century.
Characteristics:
- Unembellished depiction of nature or of contemporary life.
- Realistic characters and setting.
- Comprehensive detail about everyday occurrences.
- Plausible plot (a story that could happen in your town)
- Real dialects of the area.
- Character development important.
- Importance in depicting social class.
