YOUNG LEARNERS, Ways of Teaching Young Learners a Second Language,…
YOUNG LEARNERS
Based on Jean-Jacques Rousseau, young learners are categorized at the age of after birth until 25 years old
children can learn and master second language structures as early as 7 years old (Carmen Manuela, 2021)
-
YOUNG : being in the first or an early stage of life, growth, or development (Merriam-Webster Dictionary)
-
LEARNER : a person who is trying to gain knowledge or skill in something by studying, practicing, or being taught (Brittanica Dictionary)
In my opinion, young learner can be anyone who started to gain new knowledge of a subject or skill at the very first step; a beginner at any age.
In the terms of acquisitioning knowledge, proficiency of languages can be obtained at a very young age by following a few principles and practices

SECOND LANGUAGE
a language learned by a person after his or her native language, especially as a resident of an area where it is in general use (Dictionary.com)
-
New language is learnt in order to develop new social skill and social circle other than family's circle
Second language is much more complex compared to first language
because
second language is our non-native tongue while
the first language is learnt naturally and effortlessly as we use it since we were born
(Madisha, L., 2018)
Second language is learnt at the upper stage of life during the growth compared to the first language that we learnt through the interaction with our parents
(Madisha, L., 2018)
BILINGUALISM
-
It is cited by Gottardo, A., & Grant, A. (2008) that :
bilingualism is defined as “knowing” two
languages (Valdez & Figueroa, 1994)
Bilingual could be a person who masters in both languages and highly proficient while speaking or a person who still has preferable language to use which he/she proficient with it the most.
(Gottardo A. & Grant A., 2008)
