Meningitis is inflammation of the two inner meninges (the pia and arachnoid mater) of the brain and spinal cord. The cause of the inflammation can be: bacterial, viral or fungal. Bacterial meningitis is a life-threatening condition that affects all ages, but is most common in babies and children.

Management

Administer a single dose of parenteral Benzlypenicillin (IV or IM) ASAP do not delay for hospital admission, unless known penicillin allergy.
If Benzylpenicillin given IM it should be given proximally as possible - preferably into a part of limb that is still warm.
