Ancient China
Government: In the text it says, "He used his subjects as slave laborers to build The Great Wall and suppressed anyone who disagreed with him. This means many people would be forced to work and do things for the emperor. The author also wrote that the first emperor of China thought that unity was normal. This means when China got its new emperor things changed for all of the population a lot. (Cottrel 16)
Religion: The text says, Confucius believed that the early years of the Zhou dynasty were golden years of social harmony. Also He said that a good ruler should set an example by dealing with his subjects, using force only as a last resort. (Cottrell 12)
Technology: In the text it said "Paper and printing were possibly the most important Chinese inventions." This means Chinese would use this invention quit often and needed it for many of their arts. The author wrote that the first piece of paper was made from silk rags. This means paper has changed over the time and is now made in a very different way. (Cottrell 24)
Writing: In the text it said an ox bone or shell from a tortoise was burned until it cracked. Also the text says that "the cracks were then read to discover the answer to a question to put to the ancestors." The oracle bones were mainly used by the Ahang kings. (Cottrell 11)
Art: In the text it says "China has always been known for its exquisite arts and crafts." I know this means that China is very popular for their jewelry and style in clothing. The author said that although the arts and crafts business was small it soon evolved into being a big production. (Cottrell 56)
Commerce: The author wrote "Some of the world's greatest invention came from China. This means China was able to come up with very creative and helpful inventions. The text also says that the development of science and technology was spread throughout China. This means that China was a country that had very smart industries working there. (Cottrell 22)
Location: The text says that "The first Chinese dynasty to leave a historical record was the shang dynasty." This means the shang dynasty was the first thing to leave historical message in China's history. The author also wrote that, their land was the fertile land around the yellow river. This is telling me that the dynasty started out with only a small amount of land and in the end they had way more than that small amount. (Cottrell 10)
Mesopotamia
Location: The author wrote that "most of ancient mesopotamia lay within the borders of modern iraq." Also, mesopotamia included portions of the countries of Turkey, Syria, and Iran. (Steele 6)
Writing: On page 12 the text says, "These were pressed into soft clay with a stylus, leaving a wedge shaped mark that then hardened." Also over the centuries the marks began to represent sound and meaning. (Steel 12)
Architecture: The author wrote Ziggurats were "massive terraced platforms made of brick, and it represented a mountain stretching to the earth of heaven." It also says that the Ziggurats looked similar to the stepped pyramids in ancient Egypt. (Steel 24)
Religion: The text says "Mesopotamia was at war for most of its history, and that each sumerian state was constantly trying to defeat others. " Also the text says that there were masters of each war trying to earn more power. (Steel 42)
Government: In the text it says "Mesopotamians had kings, also known as city-state rulers that were honored with various titles." Also that kings claimed to rule by the will of gods and therefore
had to perform certain duties. (Steel 10)
Art: The Author wrote "Mesopotamians mastered many technologies and crafts at an early point in their history." The text is saying that they modeled clay into different bows, they melted copper and shaped it. (Steel 28)
Ancient Egypt
Location: On page 8 it said that, "The ancient Egyptians lived on a strip of land on either side of the Nile." Also , the text says that in the "Red Land," small settlements are supported in wadis and oases, but most people live along the Nile River. (Hart 8)
Writing: The author wrote that "it was deliberately kept complicated so that it was hard to master." This means that the hieroglyphics
were not easy to read if you did not study them. (Hart 34)
Architecture: In the text it says that "The first pyramid was built in the burial place of king Djoser in the c. 2650 BCE, by his gifted architect Imhotep." Also the pyramid built for king Khufu is the largest pyramid in Giza. (Hart 20)
Religion: In the text it says that "Many of the gods were represented by animals." An example is a baboon might stand for thoth. (Hart 24)
Government: The author wrote "When most people were to approach the king they would kiss the ground at his feet." This means that by someone doing this in front of the king that would show him that they respect him and will praise him. (Hart 12)
Art: The text says that "The gold could be beaten into shape or cast into molds." This shows that Egyptians would have many different jewelry items and that some of them would have all different meanings. (Hart 56)
Indus River Valley/Aryans
Location: In the text, the author says, under layers of mounds and dirt, archaeologists discovered the remains of 4,000 year old cities. This means these cities existed around the same time. The cities were very large and could obtain danger. (Practice Hall:World Studies)
Writing: The author states that, The writing is very hard to decipher and not many people can tell what it says unless you were living in the Ancient Civilization. The text also says that, over 400 symbols have been discovered from this civilization and many have yet to be found. (Practice Hall: World Studies)
Architecture / Technology: The text states that, people within the Indus Valley created well planned cities. This tells me that the cities were well made and could obtain much power to them because the walls were made of wells. (Prentice Hall: World Studies)
Religion: In the text the author wrote, The Aryans came from an area in Central Asia near the Caucasus Mountains. This means, They would take over the Valley and have much land to them. They were well protected and had many skills. (Practice Hall: World Studies)
Government: In the text, the author says, There was a Gana and it was made up of several different families. The Gana could be the government but in different trees. The text states, "The Aryans civilization had a large impact on modern day indian society." This tells me that they had a lot to do with the government. (Practice Hall: World Studies)
