Ancient Civilization
Mesopotamia
Location: In the text it said that the Greeks called the area Mesopotamia, which means "between the rivers." Also, in the text it states that " most of ancient Mesopotamia lay within the borders of modern Iraq." (Steele 6)
Writing: On page 12 it said "As first cities arose, people began to require records of ownership, business deals, and government. Also, "By around 3300 BCE the citizens of Uruk were using about 700 different symbols". (Steele 12)
Architecture: On page 24 it shows architecture and explains it "A lasting symbol of Ancient Mesopotamia is the ziggurat, a massive terraced platform made of brick." Also, on page 24 it says "Ziggurats looked similar to the stepped pyramids of ancient Egypt, which were used as royal tombs". (Steele 24)
Religion: On page 14 it said that "The Sumerians worshiped many gods and goddesses." Also, on page 14 it said the stars were the cows of sin or Nanna. (Steele 14)
Government: The author wrote "Sumerian rulers enjoyed great power and fame and their exploits and deeds were remembered for centuries.". Also, on page 10 it says "Mighty rulers were expected to be brave military commanders and builders of great cities.". (Steele 10)
Art: The author wrote "They were molding clay into simple pots by the eighth millennium BCE." Also, on page 28 it said that vessels were actually shaped by expert potter's wheel.

Ancient Egypt
Location: In the text it said that in ancient Egypt, "desert covers more than 90 percent of Egypt," and this was called the "Red Land." Also, the text states that for thousands of years the population of Egypt has depended on its fertile agricultural resources. (Hart 8)
Writing: In the book on page 34 it says that "Scribes had to be experts in writing hieroglyphs, an elaborate form of picture-writing with about 700 different signs." Also on page 34 it says that not to many people could master it and the scribes kept their special position. (Hart 34a)
Architecture: On page 20, the text said that "The first pyramid was built as the burial place of King Djoser in c.2650 BCE, by his gifted architect Imhotep." Also on page 20, the text said that rich offerings buried with the kings were robbed of their precious contents. (Hart 20)
Religion: On page 24, the text said the Egyptians worshiped hundreds of gods and goddesses. Also on page 24, the text said "Overall the sungod was the most deity in Egyptian religion." (Hart 24)
Government: In the text it said that they had a royal court that they used at special special occasions like the royal jubilee celebrations or the giving of gifts to favored courtiers. Also in the text it said "When people approached the king, they often kissed the ground at his feet." Which just shows how powerful the king was and how much they respected them. (Hart 12)
Art: On page 56, it says "You can see the glint of gold everywhere in Egyptian jewelry." Also in the text it said that gold mines between the Nile river and the Red Sea coast had very large quantities of gold. (Hart 57)
Ancient China
Government: On page 16, it said that the first Chinese Empire was formed in 221 B.C. On page 16 it said that "The first Emperor seems to have thought he would become immortal." which just shows how different their beliefs were and they thought that they would do all of these things if they act "perfect" or if they are the Emperor. Lastly it said that the emperor built a massive tomb guarded by thousands of warriors because he believed that the warriors would protect him in his afterlife. (Cotterell)
Commerce (trade): On page 58 it says, trade was most important and flourished in the Yuan and Mongol dynasty. Also, on page 58 it says that "Chinese merchants amassed large fortunes by exporting luxury goods such as silk, spices, teas, porcelain, and lacquerware." which means that china made a lot of money and had huge benefits from the silk road being formed. Lastly, the mongols ignored the chinese opinions and then the merchants social position improved.(Cotterell)
Writing; On page number 11, it said the Shang kings used oracle bones to answer questions about important matters. Also, it states that "The cracks were then read to discover the answer to a question put to the ancestors." As a result, people write down questions and answers on the oracle bone. (Cotterell)
Technology: On page 24 it says that paper and printing is one of the most important chinese inventions of all of history. The first paper ever made was made from silk rags, although later through chinese history the paper was made by hemp, bamboo, and mulberry bark. Lastly on page 24 it said that there were over 80,000 chinese symbols so a printer they made did not entirely replace the block printing they used to use to print symbols on paper very fast.(Cotterell)
Art: On page 56 it says that China has been always know for its arts and crafts. It said that China always made luxury goods such as, "Chinese bronze, jade, silk, lacquer, and porcelain were prized in Asia and Europe." Lastly it said that Artisans in Ancient China were the most important members in Ancient China. (Cotterell)
Location: On page 40 it says that these towns inside of the great wall of china were "These enclosed urban communities were centers of government and the power traditionally built on a grid system and divided into sections called wards." Also on page 40 it says that, all of the Wards were walled up and locked up at nights.(Cotterell)
Religion: On page number 12, it said that "He said that a good ruler should set an example by dealing fairly with his subjects, using force only as a last result." which is just showing that confucius didn't want people just going around hurting people instead the ruler should deal fairly with their people. Also on page 12 confucius believed that family relationships should be treated with mutual respect, which good family bonds leads to a good society. Lastly. it said that "Confucius encouraged ancestor worship because it strengthened family loyalty."(Cotterell)
