Ancient China
Government: On page 16, the text states that the first emperor of china left an impression for the rest of thee dynasties. The text shows that the emperor had strong authority over its citizens. The text says that the harsh ruling of the emperor led to constant attempts to overthrow it.
Religion: On page 26, the text says that the people of Ancient China were divided into the three ways, Buddhism, Daoism, and Confucianism. On page 27, the text said that Confucius taught people to have respect for each other. Respect was especially important in the family. Also on that page, the text says,"The Daoists did not agree with Confucius." (Cotterell)
Art: On page 56, the author wrote,"China is famous for its beautiful, high-quality ceramics. On the same page, the book says that some of China's finest are pieces were religious or ceremonial objects. The book also says that Chinese artisans made fine silk cloth and tableware. (Cotterell)
Writing: On page 11, it said," they used oracle bones to consult the ancestral spirits on important matters. Also on page 11, the book says that the questions were answered in the cracked lines on the scorched oracle bone. The oracle bones were ox bones and turtle shells. (Cotterell)
Location: On page 38, the text says,"China is dominated by two great rivers, the Yellow RIver in the north and the Yangzi in the south." On page 58, he text says that the various dynasties of China were right in the middle of the silk road. On page 59, the text says Khan's dynasty reached from Japan to Europe. (Cotterell)
Technology: On page 22, the text says,"Some of the world's greatest inventions came from China." The authors wrote that China led other countries in the field of inventions. The text also says that these inventions include the wheel barrow, the first seismometer, fireworks, and guns. (Cotterell)
Commerce (trade): On page 58, the text said that trade flourished under the Yuan dynasty. The text also says,"International trade thrived because caravans could travel without being in danger along the silk road. The page also says that they traded porcelain, silk, and metals. (Cotterell)
Ancient Egypt
Writing: On page 34, the text says that Scribes had to be experts at writing in their form, Hieroglyphics. It was deliberately kept complicated so that few people could master it. (Hart 34)
Architecture: On page 20, the text says,"The first pyramid was built as the burial place of King Djoser in 2650 BCE, by his gifted architect Imhotep. It also says that it was supposed to represent a gigantic stairway for the king to climb and join the sun god in the sky. (Hart 20)
Location: On page 8, the text said,"Desert covers more than 90 percent of Egypt.", this was called the Red Land. Also on page 8, the text states that for thousands of years, the population of Egypt has depended on its fertile agricultural resources. (Hart 8)
Religion: On page 24, the text said,"The Egyptians worshiped hundreds of gods and goddesses." Also on page 24, the text stated," Overall, the Sun god was the dominant deity." (Hart 24)
Government: In the text it said," The king was the most powerful and important man in Egypt- he was thought to be a god." Also in the text it said that the queen of Egypt was a goddess but was known as "Great Royal". (hart 10)
Art: On page 56, the text says,"You can see the glint of gold everywhere in egyptian jewelry." It also says that the egyptians used several precious metals and rocks in their jewelry. (Hart 56)
Mesopotamia
Location: In the text it said the Greeks called the area Mesopotamia, which meant "between the rivers". Also in the text, it states that,"most of ancient Mesopotamia lay within the borders of modern day Iraq." (Steele 6)
Writing: On page 12, the text said reeds were used to indent marks in soft clay. They used the writing system called Cuneiform which was used between 5,000 and 3,500 b.c.e They wrote in indentations on clay tablets. (Steele 12)
Architecture: In the text it said,"A lasting symbol of Ancient Mesopotamia is the ziggurat". The two main pieces of architecture in ancient Mesopotamia were the ziggurats and temples. The houses were made of mudbrick and reeds.(Steele 23)
Religion: The author wrote The sumerians worshiped many gods and goddesses. This means that they were polytheistic. They also believed in demons, ghosts, and spirits. (Steele 14)
Government: On page 10, the book said,"Sumerian Kings claimed to have ruled by the wills of gods." The rulers were head of their military. There was a ruler for each city-state, which means there were many rulers. (Steele 10)
Art: In the text it said,"The mesopotamians mastered many technologies and crafts at an early point in their history.". They were molding clay into simple pots. They also made bowls out of copper. (Steele 28)
