The ability to understand spoken (and written) language refers to receptive language skills. Development of these skills is vital if a child is to communicate successfully with their peers. If a child does not understand what the speaker is saying to them, they may give an inappropriate response, which can appear as being rude or demonstrating rebellious behaviour.
Children with receptive language disorders may have issues with auditory processing, attention and memory span, understanding of words, phrases or concepts, inferential comprehension, semantic skills or grammar. Early identification of any of these difficulties is important as treatment can help to decrease the impact they may have on a child's development.
