Unit Two: Ancient Civilizations
Mesopotamia
Location: On page, 6 it said " from around 3500 BCE, the first cities, states, and empires arose." Mesopotamia includes different regions like mountains and reed-filled wetlands. (Steele)
Writing: On page, 12 it said " By around 3300 BCE the citizens of Uruk were using about 700 different symbols, or pictographs. " They used wet clay and prested different sticks into it that mean different things. (Steele)
Architecture: On page, 24 it said " A lasting symbol of ancient Mesopotamia id the ziggurat, a massive terraced platform made of brick." Ziggurats are similar to ancient pyramids because they have many levels. (Steele)
Religion: On page, 14 it said " The Sumerians also believed in spirits, ghosts, and demons." They believed in many gods and goddesses including a Moon God, Water God, Enil, Ninhursag, Nintu, Namma, and many others. (Steele)
Government: On page, 10 it said " Sumerian rulers enjoyed great power an fame and their exploits and deeds were remembered for centuries." The rulers believed that they were gods so they had to perform certain deeds. (Steele)
Art: On page, 28 it said " Some time before 3500 BCE, they invented the potter's wheel, which made pottery production far more efficient." In 3000 BCE metal workers mixed tin and copper and they made bronze metal. (Steele)
Ancient Egypt
Location: On page, 8 it said "Black Land, named after the rich dark silt on which the farmers grew their crops." Also. the text states that the desert covers over 90 percent of Egypt, and it was called the "Red Land." (Hart)
Writing: On page, 34 it said "Scribes had to be experts in writing hieroglyphs, an elaborate form of picture-writing with about 700 different signs." Also they wrote from write to left and also top to bottom like we do. (Hart)
Architecture: On page, 20 it said " Some later kings had step pyramids, too, but in the region of King Sneferu the true pyramid with sloping sides developed." Also they made a pyramid that had six different levels and they called it the six stages. (Hart)
Religion: On page, 24 it said " Each of the 42 different administrative districts ( or "nomes") had its own god, and there were many others besides." Also it says that the sun god could take different forms and was seen responsible for creation. (Hart)
Government: On page, 10 it said " There was an effective system of training a prince to become a pharaoh, which included training him to become an expert sportsman and potinel war leader." Also the king believed that he was a god when he was serving.(Hart)
Art: on page, 56 it said " You can see the glint in egyptian gold everywhere, mines between the Nile and the Red Sea coast yielded large quantities of this precious metal." Also they used a lot of different stones of all different colors. (Hart)
Ancient China
Government: On page 16, it said Qin had a bunch of soldiers make status so he would be powerful and protected in the after life. On page 16, it also said " The empire took its name from the Qin ( pronounced chin) to become china. Lastly he was the one that started the great wall of china. (Cotterell)

Technology: On page 22, it said ''In the middle ages many Chinese inventions were carried along the silk road to europe." On page 22, it also said they became more wealthy in paper and they also discovered gunpowder which revolutionized wars. They also bread a lot of animals which changed agriculture forever. Writing: On page 11, it said the Shang kings used oracle bones to answer questions about important matters. Also, it states that " the cracks were then read to discover the answer to a question put to the ancestors." As a result, people would write down questions and answers on the oracle bone. (Cotterell)
Commerce (Trade): On page 58, it said ''trade flourished under the Mongol, or Yuan, dynasty." On page 58 it also said that, that is how they spread religion and they discovered new spices, more porcelain. Also on the trade route there were barely any taxes that had to be paid because they were trading. (Cotterell)
Art: On page 56, it said that China has always been really good at making arts and crafts and have made a lot of money doing it. To make a living most of the people would sell their artwork and most would sell for a lot of money. The most common of the art was bronze. (Cotterell)
Location: On page 38, it said that the first civilization grew up on the land by the yellow river. On page 38, it also says " In the 6th century, the yellow and yangzi rivers were linked by the Grand Canal, a great waterway that stretched across the Chinese Empire." This shows that the yellow river was a great thing to have around their location. (Cotterell)
Religion: On page 12, it said " The increasing turmoil led Confucius to develop a new moral outlook." The text also said In the beginning of the Zhou time period everything went smoothly and then Confucius said things were going bad. As a result Confucius began to speak to the world and many people remember him today. (Cotterell)
Indus River Valley
Location: In Prentice Hall: World Studies it says Under the rock and sand in the mountains they found 4,000 year old cities. It also says They had rich soil and were good for agriculture. Also 5,000 years ago a civilization formed along the indus river.
Architecture/Technology: In Prentice Hall: World Studies it says "In these cities there are remnants of the world's earliest sanitation." It also says that the wall was built to keep the enemies out and also helped with flooding. Also the indus people were very smart and good at planning and building their cities.
Writing: In Prentice Hall: World Studies it says "Over 400 symbols have been uncovered from different locations." It also says Many symbols are on seals and other material. It also says That they can't decipher it and some people wonder if it was even a writing system.
Government: In Prentice Hall: World Studies it says A castle is a group of people and when you are born you can't change until the after life if you had good karma. Also it started because they had four social groups and then they turned into this. Lastly they were separated based on wealth and occupation.
Religion: In Prentice Hall: World Studies They have a writing named vedas. The aryan religion have changed to the hinduism over time. For example They have picked up a bunch of the same traditions. (Prentice Hall: World Studies)
