Unit Two: Ancient Civilization
Mesopotamia
Location: On page 6, it said "It was here, from 3500 BCE, the first cities, states and empires arose." Mesopotamia includes different regions like mountains and reed-filled wetlands. (Steele)
Architecture: On page 24, it said " A lasting symbol of ancient Mesopotamia is the ziggurats, a massive terraced platform made of brick." In the text it also says that ziggurats had a small temple at the top. (Steele)
Writing: At a certain time the sumerian started to make records of their lives. I know this because on page 12 it says, " The sumerian devised the world's first script or writing symbol. (Steele)
Religion: The author wrote that the sumerians believed in more than one god. On page 14, it says " The sumerians worshiped many gods and goddesses. (Steele)

Government: On page 10 it says" City-states ruler were honored with various titles, such as en (lord), ensi (governor), or lugal (king). The rulers of Sumer loved all the fame and wealth they had. (Steel)
Art: The Mesopotamians were masters at art and technology at an early point in history. Page 28 says," Some time before 3500 BCE, they made a potter's wheel which made pottery production far more efficient. (Steele)
Ancient Egypt
Location:On page 8 it said that " the Egyptians lived on the "Black Land, named after the rich dark silt on which the farmers grew their crops." Also the text states that the desert covers over 90% of Egypt and this was called the Red Land

Writing: On page 34 it said, " Scribes had to be experts in writing hieroglyphic. The text also shows three different types of writing for different occasions. (Hart)
Architecture: On page 20 it said " The pyramids were intended to protect the bodies of the pharaohs buried inside them." The text says that pyramids were supposed to represent a stairway to the gods. (Hart)
Religion: On page 24 it said " The Egyptians worshiped hundreds of gods and goddesses, sometimes it is difficult to work out who was who. The text also says that the gods and goddesses were represented as animals. (Hart)
Government: The text says that the pharaoh wasn't only thought of as a king, but a god as well. On page 10 it says "There was an effective way of training a prince to become a pharaoh. (Hart)
Art: The text says that egyptians would find a bunch of different stones such as gold diamonds, emeralds, lapis etc. On page 57 it said "You can see the glint of gold everywhere in Egyptian jewelry. (Hart)
Ancient China
Government: The text said "The first Emperor seems to have the thought he would be immortal.Also, the chinese empire started in 221 B.C. The author wrote, The last emperor was non-chinese. (cottrell) 16
Technology: The author wrote that some of the world's greatest inventions came from China. Also, in the text it states "In the Middle Ages many Chinese inventions were carried along the Silk road to Europe. Lastly, Some of the greatest inventions they made were paper money, clockwork, silk, porcelain, fireworks, kites, umbrellas, and the wheelbarrow. (Cottrell) 22pg
Writing: In the text it said, an ox bone or shell from a tortoise burned until it cracked. Also the text says that " the cracks were then read to discover the answer to a question put to the ancestors. The oracle bones were mainly used by the shang kings. (Cottrell 11)
Commerce: The text said " Trade flourished under the Mongol, or Yuan, dynasty." The text also states that Chinese merchants amassed large fortunes by exporting luxury items and goods. The author wrote that trade thrived because caravans wouldn't get hurt while traveling.(Cotterell) 58pg
Art: In the text it said that chinese bronze, jade silk, lacquer, and porcelain were very high in demand throughout Asia and Europe. Also the text states " Although the manufacture of decorative objects involved sophisticated techniques, many were mass produced." After the scholar and peasants in China, Artisans were considered the most important members of society. (Cotterell) 56pg
Location:The author wrote Towns and cities in ancient China
were built using a grid system that divided into sections. The text also says "The landscape of Imperial China was dotted with walled towers and cities." Finally the higher and lower class of China were separated. (Cottrell) 40
Religion: The text said " This increase of turmoil led Confucius to develop a new moral outlook. The author wrote that Confucius's outlook was about kindness, respect and strength of the family. Also, Confucius believed that a good family bond creates a stable society. (Cotterell) 12pg
Indus River Valley/Aryans
Location: I know that the Indians lived long ago because there are really old cities found underground. In the text it said that " archeologists discovered the remains of 4,000 year old cities, which exist at the same time as the Egyptians and the Mesopotamian." Also the Indus River Valley has very rich soil and is surrounded by high mountains, deserts, and oceans (Prentice Hall: World Studies)
Writing: The Indus Valley people had very unique writing. I know this because in the text it says that we still have not deciphered it. We have still not explored all of the Indus society because of this. (Prentice Hall: World Studies)
Religion: We don't know much about the religion of the Aryans. I know this because the text says most about what we know about them comes from books called vedas. The text says, "The Vedas are mostly religious texts, but they also describe famous victories of the Aryans as they invaded India." What we know most is that their religion was called Brahmanism, and it later developed into Hinduism. (Prentice Hall: World Studies)
Architecture/Technology: The Indus valley people cared lots about hygiene. In the text it said "Their cities resembled the importance of this idea. There are remains of the earliest sanitation system such as wells and water way going to houses. The people also had warehouses, brick platforms and protective walls. (Prentice Hall:World Studies)
Government:Government: Ancient Indus River Valley Civilization had a very big impact on the government of India today. I know because the caste system was created by the Ancient Aryans but India uses it today. The text says, "A caste is a social group in which people are born and they cannot change." Also, the caste system had four main groups which they called the Varnas. (Prentice Hall: World Studies)
