Unit two: Ancient Civilizations
Mesopotamia
Location: in the text it said ¨ the ancient greeks called it mesopotamia, meaning between the rivers.¨ Mesopotamia is now modern day Iraq.(Steele 6)
Writing: The author wrote that ¨ By around 3300 BCE the citizens of Uruk were using about 700 different symbols, or pictographs.¨And many many years after this writing style became more popular in mesopotamia.(Steele 12)
Architecture: In the text it says ¨A lasting symbol of ancient mesopotamia is the ziggurat, a massive terraced platform made of brick. It represented a mountain, stretching from earth to the heavens.¨ It says that the ziggurat is made out of brick but not our traditional brick there bricks were made out of mud and straw. (Steele 24)
Religion: in the text it says ¨the samurais worshiped many gods and goddesses.¨ it also says that they believed in many more gods later on in time. (Steele 14
Government:The author wrote ¨ City-state rulers were honored with various titles, such as en (lord), ensi (governor), or lugal (king). Sargon was the first person to make an empire and was the emperor. (Steele 10)
Art:on page 26 it says ¨ The Mesopotamians were great lovers of poetry, art, and music.¨ Thi might mean that they paved the path for music now days
Ancient Egypt
Location: On page 8 it said that since desert covered 90 percent of egypt people lived on the banks of the Nile river. Also in the text it said that ¨When the Nile waters subsided, the farmers went to work sowing barley and emmer wheat.
(Hart)
Writing:in the passage it says ¨They could be written from left to right, right to left, or top to bottom.¨ I know this means that it was really not that easy to learn hieroglyphics
Architecture: On page 20 it says,¨The first pyramid was built as the burial place of King Djoser in c. 2650 BCE, by his gifted architect Imhotep. It also says on page 20, That the building was basically a huge star well for the kind to climb to feel more connected to the gods and goddesses.
Religion:In the text it says ¨Many of the gods are represented by animals: a baboon might stand for Thoth, god of wisdom, at one temple, and a Moon god named Khonsu at another. Also on page 24 it says that there were figures that represented the annual flood of the Nile river.
(Hart
Government: On page 10 it says, ¨ The king was not only the most powerful and important man in Egypt- he was thought to be a god.¨ I know that he was important because gods are very important people warship them everyday. (Hart
Art: On page 54 it states that ¨The earliest picture of a loom in Egypt Is on a pottery bowl dated to c. 3000 BCE, and flax was used for thousands of years after this.¨ I can tell that flax was a type of ink or writing utensil from this.(Hart)
Ancient China
Government: I believe that Civil servants helped to run the government. They had various jobs. The highest ranks worked in the palace and reported directly to the empire. These officials would have control over large areas of the empire. Other officials worked in local districts. They would collect taxes, enforce laws, and act as judges. They also kept the local census and often taught or managed local schools.
Technology: i believe the inventions include the umbrella, porcelain, the wheelbarrow, iron casting, hot air balloons, seismographs to measure earthquakes, kites, matches, stirrups for riding horses, and acupuncture. Also other many different items
Writing:On page 11 it said that the " used oracle bones to consult the ancestral spirits an important matter." Also, answers from important questions were answered from the cracks on the oracle bones. The oracle bones were inscribed on ox bones and tortoiseshells.
Commerce(trade):commerce did not play an important role in ancient China. However, starting from the 6th century BCE, China experienced unprecedented growth in this area. Land became privatized and a highly sought-after commodity, contracts began to be widely used in transactions, some sort of market network emerged, and merchants started to exert influence on society
Art:: I believe that Ancient China covered a vast and ever-changing geopolitical landscape, and the art it produced over three millennia is, unsurprisingly, just as varied.
Location:Like the other early civilizations, Ancient China developed along rivers. There were 2 important river valleys in Ancient China: the Huang He or “Yellow” River to the north and the Yangtze River to the south. The Yellow River ge
ts its name from the yellowish tint of its water. This comes from a rich yellow colored soil that was great for farming
Religion: I believe that Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism are considered the “three pillars” of ancient Chinese society. As philosophies and religions, they not only influenced spirituality, but also government, science, the arts, and social structure. Though their specific beliefs and teachings have occasionally been at odds with each other, there has been much room for overlap.
Indus river Valley/Aryans
architecture
religion
location: in the text it says "Over time, a vast number of settlements were built on the banks of the Indus River and surrounding areas." Also the text states that the Indus river valley is by a very well place to start farming because of its rich soil which is perfect for farming and agriculture. Finally the river covers most of Pakistan. (Prentice Hall: World Studies)
