Three Modes of Representation

Enactive Representation
means
representing understanding through motor responses
uses
manipulative to teach new material
for example
have grade 4 students group mini cubes when learning multiplaction.
have kindergarten students play "stella, stella, olla". They learn the game and sng through clapping patterns.
is second
Iconic Representation
means
representing understanding through images
uses
diagrams, illustrations, maps, etc. to accompany instruction
for example
have grade 1 students draw a map of their school, house or community in a unit of communities.
give grade 10 students a periodic tabl when teachingthem about different element notations and groupings of elements
is third
Symbolic Representation
means
representing understanding through symbol systems
uses
familiar systems such as language, math notation etc. in order tio teach new concepts in an already familiar subject.
for example
have grade 7 students take notes during a unit on ancient egypt.
