Telemachus heads out from the hut, telling Eumaeus that the stranger will have to go begging at his house. When Telemachus reaches home, Euryclelia is overwhelmed and very happy to see him, so is tearful Penelope. Penelope asks Telemachus about his trip and he says that he will soon tell her, but to first bathe and pray to Zeus for revenge. Piraeus brings Theoclymenu to the Palace and Telemachus welcomes him in as a guest, feeding him and having him bathed. Afterwards he tells Penelope about his travels. During his story, godlike Theoclymenus intervenes and reports a promising sign for Odysseuss' family during his own travels. Meanwhile, the suitors played discus and darts, until their favorite waiter suggested that they eat. Odysseus sets out towards town with Eumaeus. When they reach the fountain in the center of town, they meet the goat herd man, Melanthius. Melanthius insults them and kicks Odysseus in the side, so Odysseus prays for Revenge. The goat herd returns to the palace and eats food with all the other suitors who are fond of him. The loyal dog Odysseus left behind as a puppy, 20 years earlier, recognizes his master then dies. Odysseus goes into his house as a beggar and Telemachus gives him food, telling him to beg from all the suitors. The suitors each give him scraps except Antonius, who hits him with a footstool. Odysseus curses him and the others reproach Antonius for his actions against the poor old man. Penelope invites the supposed beggar to talk with her about his travels, wanting to see if he has any news of Odysseus. She promises him new clothes and more food if he tells her the whole truth of his journey. Odysseus puts the conversation aside for later at night, fearing the rambunctious, drunk and angry suitors. She agrees and they plan for Penelope to stay where she is until it is safe for Odysseus to come over.
