Anatomical Terminology
Front of the Body
Ventral ( front or direction of the front of the body)
Anterior (front or found on the front of the body)
Abdomen (between the chest and pelvis
Thorax (extends from the neck to the diaphragm)
Backside of the Body
Dorsal (back portion of the body)
Posterior (back or found on the back of the body)
Postion of body parts
Deep (position of a structure as away from the structure of the body)
Palmar (relating to the palm of the hand
Plantar (Relating to the sole of the foot)
Supination (rotation of the forearm and hand so the palm faces foreward or upward
Pronation (ration movement of the forearm the results in the palm facing posteriorly)
Flexion (forward bending)
Extension (movement that increases the angle of two parts of the body)
Eversion (turning inside out)
Center/Midline of the body
Medial (center of middle of the body)
Away from the Center/Midline
Proximal (Part of the body closer to the center than any other)
Lateral (to the side or away from the middle of the body)
Distal (Part of the body farther away from the center of the body than any other)
Abduction (movement away from the midline)
Adduction (movement of a limb closer to the midline)
Inversion (movement of the sole towards the median plane)
Head of the body
Cranial (relating to the skull or cranial)
Caudal (away from the head
Superior (toward the head end of the body
Inferior (away from the head)
Planes of the Body
Transverse (horizontal plane divides the body into upper and lower parts
Sagittal (vertical plane divides the body into left and right
Frontal (vertical plane running from side to side divides the body into anterior and posterior
