Planes of the Body

Frontal Plane (Coronal Plane) - Vertical Plane - runs side to side - Divides body into anterior/posterior portions

Sagittal Plane (Lateral Plane) - Vertical Plane - runs front to back - divides body into left/right sides

Transverse Plane (Axial Plane) - Horizontal Plane - Divides body into upper/lower parts

Movement of the Body

Inversion - Sole toward median plane

Eversion - Act of turning inside out

Extension - Increases angles between bones/ body parts

Supination - Rotation of forearm - palm faces forwards/upwards

Flexion - Forward bending

Pronation - rotation of forearm - palm faces backwards/downwards

Adduction - Limb towards midline of body

Abduction - Limb away from midline of body

Location

Palmar - palm of hand

Plantar - Sole of foot

Cranial - Skull/cranium

Superior - toward upper part of body

Inferior - lower part of body

Caudal - near tail/posterior part of body

Superficial - on surface/shallow

Deep - away from surface

Ventral - underside of animal/plant

Dorsal - upper side/back of animal

Midline/Center

Proximal - near center of body/ point of attachment

Medial - Toward middle/center -opposite of lateral

Distal - Farther away from center than other parts

Lateral - to side/away from the middle of body

Thorax - mammal - part of body between neck/abdomen

Posterior - further back in position/near rear

Anterior - front of structure

Abdomen - bounded by diaphragm and pelvis
