Anatomical Terminology
Parts of the body
Thorax: part between the neck and abdomen
Abdomen: area of the body that contains most of the internal organs
Ventral: underside of the abdominal
Dorsal: upper part of the back
Cranial: the skull
Caudal: the tail
Palmar: palm of hand
Plantar: sole of foot
Planes of the body
Transverse plane: divides body into top and bottom halves
Sagittal plane: divides body into left and right halves
Frontal plane: divides body into front and back halves
Locational terms
Anterior: the front of the head
Posterior: near the back/rear
Lateral: from side to side (left to right)
Medial: middle of body
Superior: above head
Inferior: below head
Superficial: on the surface/shallow
Deep: further into the body
Action terms
Abduction: movement away from the midline or another body part
Adduction: movement towards the midline or another body part
Flexion: bending a limb or joint
Extension: an increase of the angle between body parts
Supination: rotation of the forearm and hand so the palm faces forward/upward
Pronation: rotation of the forearm and hand so the palm faces backward/downward
Inversion: inverting something
Eversion: turning something inside out
