Anatomical Terminology
Regions of the trunk
abdomen - area between the chest and pelvis
thorax - area between the abdomen and neck
general movements
Adduction - motion of a limb towards the middle/body
Abduction - motion of a limb away from the middle/body
Flexion - forward bending
Extension - movements that increase the angle between 2 parts of the body
Feet
Inversion - moving of the foot inwards
Eversion - moving of the foot outwards
Plantar - relates to the sole of the foot
Directions based on the trunk
Proximal - near the trunk part of the body
Distal - away from trunk part of the body
Hand
Supination - rotation of the forearm and hand so that the palms face up
Pronation - rotation of the forearm and hand so that the palm faces downwards
Palmar - palm of the hand
Planes
Transverse Plane - Horizontal plane splits the body into top and bottom
Sagittal Plane - Vertical plane splits the body into left and right
Frontal Plane - Vertical plane splits the body into front and back
General directions of the body
Dorsal & Posterior - back Side
Ventral & Anterior - front side
Lateral - to the side of
Medial - towards the middle
Superior - top or above
Inferior - below
Directions in relation to head
Cranial - towards the head
Caudal - away from the head
General descriptions
Superficial - on the surface or shallow
Deep - away from the surface
