The Synthesis of Diphenylmethanol
▢ 1. Dissolve ~0.364 g benzophenone in 5 mL ethanol.
In a 25 mL conical flask.
Stir the solution with a magnet.

Mix ~0.084 g sodium borohydride with 1.5 mL cold water.

Add the mixture (2) dropwise to the solution of benzophenone (1).
▢

Stir the mixture for a further 40 minutes.
▢

Mix 10 mL ice water and 1 mL concentrated hydrochloric acid in a 50 mL beaker.

Add (5) slowly to mixture.
Diphenylmethanol precipitates out.

After all the product has crystallized -
Filter it down on a Büchner funnel.

8.
Recrystallize it by adding 15 mL petroleum ether (60-80 degrees Celsius) and leaving it to evaporate.

9.
Dissolve ~0.010 g of your product in a few drops (from 5 mL) of methylene chloride/dichloromethane.

Wash it twice with 5 mL portions of cold water.
Suck the product as dry as possible.
At room temperature.
