Directional Terms
Distal
A part of the body that is farther away from the center of the body than another body part
Proximal
A part of the body that is closer to the center of the body than another part
Lateral
To the side or away from middle of the body
Medial
Towards the vertical midline of the body
Superior
Above
Inferior
Below
Posterior
Towards the back
Anterior
Towards the front
Superficial
Closer to the surface
Deep
Further away from the surface
Body Planes
Transverse plane
Horizontal plane; divides body into upper and lower parts
Sagittal plane
Vertical plane running front to back; divides body into right and left side
Frontal plane
Vertical plane running side to side; divides body into anterior and posterior portions

Motion of turning palm anteriorly
Pronation
Motion of turning palm posteriorly

Movement of a limb toward the midline of the body

Movement of a limb away from the midlline of the body

Movement of the sole of the foot towards the median plane

Movement of the sole of the foot away from the median plane

Movement that increases angle between two parts of the body
