AMPUTEE MANAGEMENT
FACTS
causes infection, gangrene, T2DM poor managment, poor circulation, accidents,frost bite or genetic cause(born without full limbs)

pre removal: increase strenght on affected side and Upper limbs, good nutritional status and CV fitness
post removal: pain management, stump healing, WB as part of stump management, prevent contractures, early mobilising

BENEFITS
pre op physio: quicker healing, less pain, decreased length of stay
post op physio: improved QOL, improved functional status through balance, flexibility, strength and coordination

DIFFICULTIES

long term rehabilitation with ups and downs as stump changes, weight of client changes, or other medical issues arise
depression, sense of loss
loss of job, income, identity
FEELINGS
for the client: sense of loss, shame of not being the provider of the family, being seen as less of a man.

Disappointment with the long waiting times before seeing a prosthetist and the lenghty wait times for funding to be available to purchase equipment required

OPPORTUNITIES

for the physio; being able to provide a better service for clients post amputee management through increased knowledge, increased awareness of who is locally involved in the managment and being able to link clients in with these services as required
