Elementary Mathematics
Week 1
We went over the class syllabus
Learned about the story of one Story of One Documentary
Week 3
Week 2
Worked with different bases
Used Binary and Mayan number system.
Introduced to different bases
Went over different algorithms
Used different algorithms to add in different bases
Went over order of operations
Week 7
Week 8
Week 5
Week 6
Week 4
Week 10
Week 9
Week 12
Week 13
Week 14
Week 11
We worked on subtraction algorithms
We went over multiplication strategies
The story of one showed us the evolution from how the number systems started to where they are now
We converted numbers in different bases and learned what blocks looked like in different bases
Here is a video we watched in class to explain. Twelve Toes
Something I use to remember the order is PEMDAS
Some algorithms learned were column, lattice, standard, and partial sums. This video helps show the lattice addition strategy Lattice Addition
We used the algorithms to solve equations that were also in a different base
Some examples of the algorithms we learned were expanded form and equal addends
The strategies were to build up based on what you already know, use blocks, and or use arrays as a way to group and count
This video was used to explain the build up strategy Building Up
Divisibility
Greatest common factor and the different methods like intersection of sets
Least common multiple and different methods like prime factorization
Integers
What makes it an integer
Ways to represent integers
They can be represented pictorially or concretely
They are whole numbers that can be negative or positive
Integers Continued
Multiplying positive and negative integers
Types of numbers Ex. Natural, real, rational, imaginary, etc
Same signs means positive, different signs means negative
Decimals
Multiplying with decimals
Decimal Values
Decimals Continued
Scientific notation and multiplying decimals
You can also show it on blocks to a limited value
Test
Decimals Continued
Percentage increase, decrease, and change
Fractions: Defining and Showing
Fractions: Addition and Subtraction
Fractions: Multiplication and Division
Good way to represent fractions visually
Easy way to visually see the addition/subtraction
