What are the main mental health struggles teenagers are facing today
Depression: Around 20 percent of all teenagers go through experiencing depression before they reach adulthood. Depression is the continuous feeling of sadness. It has an impact on your emotions, thoughts, and behavior and can cause a number of mental and physical health issues.
Anxiety: Your body's natural reaction to stress is known as anxiety. It is a sensation of fear about what can happen.
ADHD: People who suffer from attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder might have trouble focusing, managing impulsive behaviors or being overly active.
PTSD: Long after a traumatic event has passed, people with PTSD continue to endure unsettling thoughts and sensations related to their experience. Flashbacks or dreams may cause them to relive the incident, they may experience sadness, fear, or rage, and may feel distant from other people.
What causes mental health problems for teenagers?
Genetic factors: the risk can be increased by having a close relative who is suffering from a mental disorder. There is no guarantee that other family members will develop a mental disease just because one does.
Abuse of drugs and alcohol: Using drugs might cause a manic episode (bipolar illness) or a psychotic episode. Paranoia can be brought on by drugs like cocaine, marijuana, and amphetamines.
There are many things that can cause mental health problems; childhood abuse, trauma, neglect, loneliness, experiencing discrimination, debt, bereavement, etc.
Early life circumstances: unpleasant early life events, such as abuse or neglect, might raise the risk of developing several mental diseases.
How has mental health struggles for teenagers increased in these past few decades?
Globally, there is an increase in mental health issues. In the past ten years, there has been a 13% increase in mental health illnesses and substance use disorders, primarily due to demographic shifts (to 2017). In the present day, 1 in 5 people live with a disability due to mental health issues.
