Definition
Is a condition in which the hearts function as a pump is inadequate to deliver oxygen rich blood to the body
Pathophysiology
The hearts capacity to increase the force of contraction has been accident and they had cannot respond to the body's metabolic demands
The heart does not function adequately due to a problem within the heart itself, such as ischaemic heart disease, cardiomyopathy and constrictive pericarditis
Clinical manifestations
Difficulty in breathing
Dyspnoea
Coughing
Wheezing
Haemoptysis
Anorexia
Causes
Obesity
Pregnancy
Severe anemia
Hyperthyroidism
Pyrexia
Management
Drug therapy including diuretics, vasodilators and sympathomimetic agents
Encourage bed rest with limited activity during acute phase
Sodium restricted diet, well balanced, small but frequent meals
Oxygen therapy as prescribed
Care of oedematous areas
