Process to Identify and Assist Struggling Students by Ron Scott
Near the beginning of the school year, send a letter/questionnaire home to the parents. Ask for parent feedback/information about:
Review : any special needs information provided by:
Observation of student and identification of weaknesses or difficulties. Identification points include:
Self-evaluation: Have I taught the content correctly or provided an appropriate learning environment? Is my teaching strategy effective and does it account for differentiated learners?
Evaluation of student: Formative. Use an appropriate assessment method to determine specific learning needs.
Conference with parents: Inform the parents of the need for differentiation, and obtain approval for differentiated instruction.
Conference with the special education department at the school or institution. Inform the department of the student's needs.
Standardized evaluation of the student by the special education department for diagnosis.
IEP (Individualized Education Plan): Create an IEP, which acts as a roadmap for what the teacher and school will focus on for that
term.
